"Without Maria's help and advice, I wouldn't still be breastfeeding. We had a big problem in the first few days and her help was invaluable to us. We were so lucky to have found her and Postpartum Place. I look forward to Thursdays and the Mom's group. I leave there each week feeling happy and supported. It is the cheapest therapy around."

I was so fortunate to hear about the Postpartum Place from one of the pediatricians in our practice (interestingly enough, the doctor did not refer me to the lactation consultant affiliated with the practice). My son, Hunter, was three weeks old and had not fully caught up to his birth weight of 8 lbs. 4 oz. We were trying to breastfeed. It was tolerable, but still a bit awkward and painful. I really wanted to breastfeed, but was uncertain how I could continue. Before calling it quits, my husband and I agreed to try the Postpartum Place and commit to breastfeeding for another week.

When I arrived in Chatham, teary-eyed and exhausted, I knew right away that I was in good hands. Our lactation consultant, Dawn, was knowledgeable, supportive and comforting. She observed my son and me through a feeding cycle and got to the root of our problem quickly. Our latch simply was not the best. Within 20-25 minutes, Hunter and I found a new position for nursing; much more comfortable for a mother recovering from a C-section delivery and sort of a modification of a position found in the standard nursing guides. It was almost as if our lactation consultant custom tailored it for us. It worked so well.

Right there at the appointment, Hunter seemed to be getting more milk and there was no pain at all! With Hunter full and fast asleep and time left in our session, my consultant taught me how to use a pump, pointed out some “super foods” for lactating women and informed me of a wonderful new mothers group sponsored by the Postpartum Place.

The new mothers group was well attended by very interesting, lovely women who were very willing to share stories about the challenges of motherhood and nursing. At some point, we had all become so proficient at nursing that you could almost forget that we all came to the Postpartum Place because we each had such a rough start. We weren’t physically better off than women who “couldn’t breastfeed”; we were simply more committed to nursing, so we got help early from great lactation consultants.

It is a sad fact, but too many women give up on breastfeeding before seeking support from a good lactation consultant. One or two consultations can make a really big difference. Thank goodness for the Postpartum Place! The support, from “Nursing 101” to returning to work, starting solids and weaning, was so valuable.

Thanks again!

P. S. Hunter is now eighteen months old, and we still attend play dates with the great friends we made at the Postpartum Place. Some of the moms have even started a book club.

"My son, husband and I met Maria the day after we got home from the hospital. I had read a lot about breastfeeding while I was pregnant and even attended a class on the subject. As soon as we got home I realized that I still had a lot of questions. That day Maria showed us the ins and outs of how to feed and soothe our baby. She has continued to be a great resource and support along the way as additional questions have popped up. Iʼve been back at work full-time for close to two months and I am still breastfeeding my son. We owe a huge thanks to Maria for helping us get there."

"Without Postpartum Place I would have given up on breastfeeding early on but after my consultation with Maria I never looked back.  Turned out I breastfed my son for a full year without the need to supplement with formula once.  Maria's support was INVALUABE and knowing that she was available 24/7 by phone proved very helpful!  I also attended the mother's support groups which helped with my adjustment to motherhood by talking with other moms who were going through the same thing - all in a breastfeeding friendly environment.  Maria, I can't thank you enough for all of your help and support!"

"I called Post Partum Place the day after we came home from the hospital. Maria was at my house within a few hours, helping me with the next feeding. She gave me the tools and the confidence to continue breast feeding. Her and her staff were very supportive through my calls and questions. Without them, I know I wouldn't have continued. If you are considering breastfeeding, I highly reccomend calling a lactation consultant once home from the hospital. Maria and her staff were able to give me the one on one help that I needed. Thanks!"
